Benefits & Risks

When you first start taking the Pill, you may wonder how it will affect you. It will give you peace of mind to know that today’s birth control pills are truly different from those first introduced over 40 years ago.

Today’s pill has a much lower dose of estrogen and progesterone hormones, and gives you effective contraception. Plus, use of the Pill may provide protection from diseases like certain reproductive cancers.

When you take the Pill regularly, you benefit from over 99% contraception protection. The Pill may also offer the following non-contraceptive benefits.

Risks

Although the low-dose pill may offer you many health benefits, there are still some serious (although rare) risks associated with taking oral contraceptives.

Ask yourself these questions to determine if you are at risk:

  • Are you a smoker and older than 35 years?
  • Have you had a stroke or problems with blood clots?
  • Have you ever been diagnosed with breast cancer?
  • Have you ever had a heart attack?

If you answered “yes” to any of them, make sure you discuss these issues and your medical history with your doctor before starting Cyclessa®. The Pill may not be the right choice for you if you have other conditions not listed here.

If you are already a pill user, it is important to have regular checkups. It is also important that you don’t use birth control pills if you are pregnant.
