Taking the Pill Over 35

If you’re healthy and have no risk factors, such as smoking or high blood pressure, your doctor may recommend that you stay on oral contraceptive pills right up until menopause. Continuing on oral contraceptive pills provides you with effective contraceptive protection and excellent cycle control. However, sometimes continuing to take these past 35 may make it more difficult to determine when menopause begins.

.: Detecting Menopause

Menopause generally happens around age 54, but there are wide differences among women. Some may experience hot flashes during their hormone-free week of pill taking. This may be a signal of perimenopause, but it still doesn’t accurately determine the onset of menopause.

To determine the onset, your doctor may ask you to take a short break from oral contraceptive pills to run blood tests. This will help determine if menopause has started for you.
